People And Bicycles Crowd Streets During Stay-At-Home, What Does That Mean For Future City Planning?Central Time (Wisconsin Public Radio), June 2, 2020
I talked with host Rob Ferrett about recent open streets initiatives, including Milwaukee Active Streets. Prohibiting cut-though automobile traffic and encouraging slow automobile speeds on local streets on a temporary basis can open up more space for pedestrians and bicyclists to maintain physical separation during the COVID-19 pandemic. These initiatives complement longer-term planning efforts to establish neighborhood greenways (bicycle boulevards) and other pedestrian and bicycle facilities that encourage physical activity and social connection.
Study: Most Milwaukee Drivers Don't Yield to Pedestrians
Central Time (Wisconsin Public Radio), April 3, 2018
I talked with host Rob Ferrett about our research on driver yielding behavior in Milwaukee. On average, only one in five drivers yielded to pedestrians crossing the 20 uncontrolled intersections in our study (located along main roadways with one lane in each direction and speed limits of 25 or 30 miles per hour), but yielding rates ranged from 60% to 0% across sites. Higher probabilities of yielding were associated with shorter pedestrian crossing distances, slower speed limits, less traffic on the main roadway, and pedestrians clearly indicating their intent to cross.

UWM Researcher Studies National Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety
Inside UWM (WUWM, 89.7 FM, Milwaukee), November 9, 2017
I talked with host Tom Luljak about our study of pedestrian and bicyclist fatality rates in 46 metropolitan regions of the United States. This study found that regions with low pedestrian and bicycle fatality rates tended to have central cities recognized as Walk Friendly Communities and Bicycle Friendly Communities. Results suggest that pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and safety programs should be complemented with strategies to increase walking and bicycling.
